The following is a roleplay-log from SouCon MUSH (soucon.godlike.com 4201). The world of Pern is copyright to Anne McCaffrey.

Kayjay walks over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Foloran strides over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Starr strides over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Kayjay races onto the sands pulling her tunic down over her slacks at the same time.

Ariene strides over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Rhia walks over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Foloran skids to a halt at the edge of the sands. Anxious? Foloran? Nah...

Laemir walks over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Starr almost runs into Foloran's back, squeeking nicely as she is bumped from behind. "Hey! Watch it!" she says, turning to peer at who bumped her.

Ariene wanders in, pausing at the edge of the sands. A curious look is cast at the gold and her eggs, before she looks to the other Candidates quietly.

Rhia takes a deep breath as she reaches the hot sands, stopping, casting a glance at the gold.

Laemir approaches rather carefully, eyeing Joslyn as he approaches her. A measuring tape hangs out his hip pocket, hastily shoved there when he left the barracks.

The queen appears to be dozing, her belly full and lumpy, her tail flickering as she shifts slightly, her rider wandering amid the eggs and Candidates. Grinning, Joslyn looks at them stalled by the entrance and beckons. "You can't touch them from there." Duh.

Foloran sidesteps quickly, glancing behind himself at Laemir, as if to blame that collision with Starr on /him/, instead. Ah, brotherly love. Anyway, he starts off onto the Sands again, smiling his thanks to the weyrwoman 'fore heading toward an egg..at random.

Kayjay bows respectfully to the dragon and salutes Joslyn. She gingerly steps towards the eggs, noticing jus how /hot/ the sands are getting!

Ariene hesitates for a moment longer, before stepping onto the hot sands. She winces very slightly as she does, but that passes quickly enough, and she heads in the general direction of the eggs.

Rhia looks at the golden dragon with respect, though she seems to be dozing, Rhia takes a respentful bow anyway and walks slowly out onto the sands with the others, her step a bit ginger.

As the ex-carpenter sidesteps past Josy and the sleeping gold, he grins at her. "Thankya, Josy. Don't mind if I just pull a measure on a few of the eggs do ya? I'll be gentle as a feline layin' in the sun."

Starr minces out onto the stands as the flow of others behind her moves forward. "i'm moving! I'm moving!" she says to pushy hands. Taking a few steps out, she pauses again and looks at the eggs. You can see her visibly swallow and hands begin to shake. Another candidate grabs her hand and drags her forward, trying to get Starr over her own caution.

Rhia smiles at Josy. "Thanks you Joslyn, this is very god of you...and Jeuneth."

Joslyn turns on one heel, following Laemir's path with a brow raised in doubtful speculation. "No shoving them or hammering on them or anything stupid like that," she advises, punctuated by a grumpy snore from Jeuneth. "Welcome, Rhia," is added with a smile.

Kayjay looks startled at Joslyn, then see's who she was talking to and giggles.

Kayjay looks at the eggs carefully.

Ariene casts a wary glance at the queen -- she's seen the gold in action, albeit from the stands -- and pauses in front of an egg, studying it reflectively.

Starr is carefully given a gentle shove by an overly ambitious boy and stumbles slightly. Catching herself she turns to frown at him, but brushes her shorts off and stands tall. Eyes fall on that one egg she managed to touch last time and she makes her way for it, pausing just before.

Laemir holds both hands up in the air, palms forward then turns on his best smile. "I won't even try ta push on em with my shoulder like last time." he promises, hand already reaching for his measure. The end of it trails behind him as he walks toward the egg near where Starr's headed.

Foloran may look like he's getting a tad overconfident - speedwalking across the searing hot Sands toward a more remote grouping of eggs - but that's not actually the case. He just wants to see all of 'em up close, and he's impatient. Reaching the prismatic magnificense that is one of the mottled ovoids, he halts to study..

Starr is, currently, entranced by the egg before her. Slowly, though, she reaches out a hand to place on the warm surface. It hovers an inch above the shell and trembles there. Another hand comes down over hers and actually places it upon the surface. A suprised look is given to a fellow candidate, then she grins sheepishly and leaves her hand there.

Rhia carefully walks up to an egg adorned with light swirls of color, she almost hesitates to touch, being pulled in by the silent glory of the oviod. She slowly puts a hand on the lightly textured shell, stroking the outside with reverance.

"Better not," Joslyn reiterates, just to hammer the point home before she surrenders scrutinizing Laemir with narrowed eyes. She retreats over toward her dragon, naturally, adopting a leisurely lean against the dozing gold to watch.

Always drawn to the subtle eggs, Jasmyn wanders towards an egg that doesn't look obviously like much, until you lose yourself in its beauty. She tenderly caresses it, first with her fingertips, then with the palm of her hand.

Starr slowly raises her second hand and places it upon the egg. Now she is simply beaming at the egg as she leaves her hands where they are. "It's so warm and soft..." she says in a reverant voice. Slowly one hand begins to move across the shell. Palm down, lightly carressing the shell. "They're so big!"

Only a carpenter's eye could speculate on an egg like Laemir does. Having held the best wood in all of Pern during his lifetime, he knows how to touch without marring surfaces. His palm is the only part to touch the egg in front of him, no fingertip marks daring to be left behind.

Ariene doesn't touch the egg she's studying, yet. She circles the earthen-hued orb, crouching down to get a better look at its underside, leaning in so that her forehead is nearly against the shell.

Rhia adds her other hand to the tracing of the swirls, and she begins to hum a soft song, barely loud enough for anyone to hear.

Fiona strides over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Fiona steps cautiously onto the sands, staying at the edge, looking over toward the eggs....and the gold dragon.

Kayjay squats on her haunches in front of the egg. "I wonder what you are thinking in there."

Starr very slowly leans down to put her ear to the egg, as if listening for something. Her smile is full of curiousity and wonder as she lets the armth of the shell seep into her skin. She pulls back to look at the Beggining of Time egg again, then puts her ear back down. A soft giggle ensuing from her lips.

Kayjay waves Fiona over, encouraging her with a warm glance.

Fiona takes a quick breath, and then, hands clenched into fists at her sides, strides across the sands toward the eggs. She keeps a wary, watchful eye on Jeuneth the whole time.

Rhia puts her ear gently up to the shell, and smiles softly. "That life...it just keeps getting...more..."She can't seem to find a word as she becomes distracted again.

As Laemir rounds the far side of the egg, he's looking directly at the sleeping Muinyth. His mouth purses slightly as he eyes the brown's tail, lips fashioning his words softly. "It'd be my luck to Impress a dragonet with a tail as long as his Da's, and one that'd prolly do more damage too."

Kayjay giggles at Laemir and then looks startled as her attention is drawn back to the egg. "Oh my!"

Ariene finally reaches out a hand to touch the egg she's been examining, fingertips lightly brushing the surface. She slides her fingers over the shell, feeling the contours.

Starr steps back to look at the egg that is almost as tall as her, lips quirking into a small smirk. "Absolutely amazing! Almost as big as I am!" she says, stepping forward again. Now she seems to try and hug it, though no pressure is given.

Fiona reaches the eggs, having moved to the side of the clutch furthest away from the gold, and reaches out a hand to give the nearest shell a soft caress. Her lips twitch into the barest of smile, and she allows her gaze to drop for just a moment to look at it. And then back that gaze goes onto the gold.

Hands never leaving the egg's surface, Kayjay scuttles around the egg, still on her haunches. "They seem so much more /near/."

As if on cue, the broad spade of Jeuneth's long tail thumps against the sand, her jaws opening to their widest as she yawns hugely. Joslyn steps neatly aside, perched upon her toes to watch the Candidates' with half-hidden amusement. "You should see the gold eggs," she responds to Starr's comment.

Starr looks up and turns to Joslyn. "really? Are they bigger?" she asks, standing up from hugging the egg. "I couldn't imagine an egg bigger than I am..."

Rhia sighs as she looks at the egg with such a great curiosity, questions whirl across her face, though she seems content just to look at it. "Yes, Kayjay, they do...they seem...like they are more alive." She grins, and lets out a it of a squeek when the golden dragon yawns.

Kayjay falls back on her butt, looking up at Jeuneth. She jumps up on her feet quickly, the hot sands being her motivation for fast action.

Ariene becomes lost in her study of the brownish egg, lips curving in a slight smile. She doesn't notice Jeuneth awakening, laying her palms flat on the egg.

Fiona freezes momentarily as Jeuneth moves, eyes locked on that yawning maw. Then she swallows hard, forcing herself to relax, if only slightly, and trails her hand across another shell.

Kayjay walks closer to Fiona, trying not to make it obvious. She seems intent on the egg in front of her, and she actually is. She glances over at Fiona however to make sure she is alright.

Joslyn nodsnods emphatically, her feet shifting of their own accord on the Sands, hot despite boots and socks and so forth. "Huge," is her reply, arms spread to demonstrate. Jeuneth is oblivious to the discomfort she's causing, blowing out the yawn in a gust of hot air and sand.

Starr seems to not want to leave the egg she is fondling, but does move her gaze to the other eggs. Frowning slightly she watches the others move, considering them. A moment more and she is distracted by a flurry of sand in her face. A sputtering ensues and she wipes at her face unhappily. "Thank you Jeuneth." she says.

Laemir walks over to the egg with the chestnut brown rings around it. "Ah. Now here's one I can work with." he mutters, then shoves his hand into one of his pockets. Out comes a small blob of tree gum that he uses when he has to stick something together temporarily. "This'll work..." The gum's stuck on the egg's side gently, the end of the measuring tape held there while he walks around the side, following it's 'rings'. "This one's made just fer measurin'." he comments, then grins toward the brown. "Ya did good, Da." then he waves the free hand in the air as sand wafts toward him. "Hey..."

Foloran, whose player just got off the phone with someone, and is sure you all didn't need to know that but decided to put it in there anyway, moves on to yet another egg. Ribbons of Fire seem to be his next target, quick steps across the Sands taking him nearer to the wondrous spheroid.

Rhia glances at Fiona as she moves toward the egg that is positioned just a tad bit away from the rest of the clutch. She stands back to look at it for a moment, taking in its texure and colors, and puts a hand lightly on its shell.

Jeuneth sort of smacks her jaws, fluttering her lids open one at a time to focus the facets beneath upon Starr. "She says you're welcome," Joslyn reports, openly amused in both expression and tone. "Why are you sticking things to the eggs, Laemir?"

With a last caressing stroke on the egg before her, Kayjay stands up, shaking out stiff thighs. She bows to the dragon once again and says to Joslyn."I ask to be excused, Joslyn, reluctantly, I have promised to help someone in the kitchen."

Starr smiles at the golden queen, a little wearily. Then turns back to the egg she was touching and continues doing just that.

Ariene also brushes a bit of sand from herself, getting to her feet. A glance is shot at the dragon, and she moves on to another egg, touching the shell hesitantly, now that she knows Jeuneth is awake.

Fiona forces a faint smile out, as if trying to reassure Kayjay. And then moves to another egg. She winces as the hot sand is blown across the clutch, and shakes her head a little, brushing some of the grains off her face. A look is darted towards Starr, before she reaches out to slide her hands - both of them this time - down another shell.

Kayjay strides over to the tunnel to the cavern entrance.

Rhia gives the egg one last stroke, and sighs as she looks over the clutch. "Joslyn? I have to leave, I ahve chores left to do...and its getting lat, but thank you...and thank you Jueneth, for letting me touch the eggs."

Joslyn waves after Kayjay, catching Rhia in the same gesture. "Thank you for coming, don't work too hard. At all, if you don't have to." She smiles at them both and then takes mincing steps toward whatever it is Laemir's doing now.

Laemir loops around the egg, the end of the tape matching the other end. As he peers at the handwritten numbers on it, he smiles and nods, patting the egg's side gently before answering. "Just hafta hold it on, unless ya want to come help? You could hold one side while I walk the other 'round?" Off comes the tree gum easily, leaving no mark, just like the fine wood he'd use it on. His cuff buffs the spot anyway, leaving it shining.

Rhia strides over to the tunnel to the cavern entrance.

Foloran glances up from his silent contemplation, watching other candidates leave. He offers a slight wave to each, along with a sad little smile - /he/ certainly wouldn't want to leave one of these glorious events early. Inevitably, though, his attention is drawn back to the objects of his affection - all 29 of them. 30 including..well.. Never mind.

Ariene settles her hands upon the iridescent egg she's wandered over to, stroking the warm surface gently. She's unable to help a wondering smile, as she circles the egg, hands never leaving its shell.

Jerich strides over from the entrance to the hatching cavern.

Jerich has arrived.

"I'd rather if you didn't stick things to the eggs," Joslyn informs, pacing around the egg to frown at the adhesive and then at its owner. "That can't be good," she deduces for no apparent reason. "Have someone else hold it."

Starr traces her hands down the eggs surface, just staying quiet now and being a more than a little entranced by it all.

Fiona does not pay attention to what Laemir is doing to that egg, whatever it is. She is too busy watching Jeuneth. Her breath releases in a soft sigh as she moves closer to the egg she is nearest her, and she begins to relax, slowly.

Jerich walks onto the sands.. bowing to the queen before moving quietly to an egg that is unoccupied by a candidate and slowly runs his hand along the surface..

Laemir tucks the tree gum back into his pocket then nods, his nature serious. "Shells don't mind somthin' of the trees on 'em, Josy. Maybe the lil dragonet inside'd mind, but a shell? Trees 'n dragons go good together, ya know?" he says, tilting his head a little. "See the brown? Ask him. He knows all about wood, but I bet when he was a little'un, his shell could care less."

Starr glances up at Laemir, quircking a brow, then looks back to the egg she is touching. "I really shopuld touch others...but this one is so facinating!" she says to herself.

Jerich looks over towards Laemir.. quietly listening to his conversation. Quietly wondering what he just walked into. Shaking his head, he turns back to the egg.. croaching down beside it.. he rubs it softly .. tracing his fingers along the planes of the egg..

Joslyn frowns at Laemir some more, stepping back from his egg of choice to favor him with that wry expression. "Jeuneth doesn't think you should stick stuff to the eggs," she rephrases, arms folding as she looks at the boy like she was a grown-up or something.

Ariene pauses, leaning in to rest her cheek against the egg's smooth surface. Her eyes close, and she smiles, an expression of utter content upon her girlish features.

Fiona finally lets her attention slide away from the gold dragon, toward the egg before her. She takes a deep breath and lets her hands drift across the mottled surface, a smile playing across her face.

Starr trails a finger down the eggs surface, talkign to it softly. "I wonder what sort of treasure you hold. Being this big you must be a brown or bronze...". A moment and she realizes she spoke out loud and a flush comes to her face. Looking around she tries to guess if anyone heard her talking to the shell.

Laemir rolls the measuring tape around his fist then stuffs it deeply into his pocket. "Ok," he answers good-naturedly, "Ya see, back at Ierne Weyr we had eggs, but I never could get close enuf to really, really see what they were like. This'n seemed just right to wrap my tape around, what with those rings'n all, it was easy to get the right measurement. I dunno. I'm just a dumb ole guy I guess. To me, they're all.... well... kinda like wonderful things to map out? Study? I may never get ta see em in this way. No harm meant."

Joslyn drums up a smile for Laemir now that he's behaving himself again, rocking back on her singed heals to bestow that beam upon him. "Quite understandable. But eggs're funny things and you never know what might hurt 'em. So try not to... do anything weird."

Starr strides over to the tunnel to the cavern entrance.

Laemir raises a brow at Josy's last words, but that winning smile overtakes whatever he'd want to say. "Ya, ok." he nods, then wiggles both brows, adding his own smile. "That means I can't rock 'em just a little, right?" It's evident he's teasing the goldrider.

Foloran has now seen 'em all. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he is now officially sated. Sort of. Finished studying the last of the wondrous eggs, Foloran strides cover toward Joslyn. "What's he doing, Josy?" He motions to his brother. He gets to be that wise-older-sibling thingy.

Joslyn scruntches her face up, a comically acidic expression as she nods most emphatically. "That means you can't rock 'em even a little. Behave yourself," she advises, shaking an oh-so-threatening finger before noting Foloran's approach. "Being weird."

Fiona lets her eyes close and leans her head against the warm shell momentarily. Then she sighs and straightens, moving away from the eggs regretfully. "Thank you for allowing us to touch the eggs," she murmurs softly to Joslyn, darting a look toward Jeuneth. "I need to leave now - too much to finish," she adds, with a reluctant sigh.

Ariene heaves a sigh, and drags herself away from the egg she's been fascinated with. She looks to Joslyn, and says, "Excuse me, ma'am, I have to go finish some chores."

Fiona strides over to the tunnel to the cavern entrance.

Foloran ahs softly, grinning just a touch at the weyrwoman's words. He turns to his brother, then, eyebrow raising in that scrutinizing manner only an older brother can pull off. "How were you being weird, Laemir?" Like he's in trouble, or something.

Ariene strides over to the tunnel to the cavern entrance.

Joslyn looks over a few eggs after the girls, waving to them brightly as they make their individual exits. "Bye, thanks for coming!" she calls collectively, then falls back with her hands in her pockets, hopping from one foot to the other always.

Laemir raises a thumb to his chest, pointing, his face a barrage of mock amazement. "Me? Just lookin' over this here egg is all." Now that thumb points to the suite of planets egg. "Good rings 'round it," he repeats again. "See how they all line up? All tidy like? Neat'n orderly. Yep. That's not weird. That's real goshdarn beauty."

Jerich walks around quietly to each egg.. marveling in the colors and patterns along their surface.. hoping he will get enough time to touch them all before he gets to leave..

Foloran ahs softly, eyeing his brother with that /other/ look only older brothers can pull off - that 'are you insane?' look. "I see.. I guess I can't disagree with you, though." He glances around the Sands. "I think they're all beautiful." There. That's Foloran's official opinion.

Jerich chuckles

"Of course it is. They all are," Joslyn contributes dutifully, stealing a glance over at Jeuneth who seems placated by all this talk, yawning once again as she burrows her belly into the Sand cozily. "We oughta pack it up soon, though, and let her sleep so she ain't grumpy tomorrow."

You are no longer quiet on sow.

Foloran's gaze then turns back to Joslyn again, and he nods. "Fair enough.. Thanks for letting us come out here again, Joslyn." Bright, and sincere smile gracing the young man's features. He turns that smile of his up at the Gold, next, "And thank you, too, Jeuneth."

Laemir obligingly nods a few times then takes one last pat on the egg's side, again just the palm caressing it, not the fingertips. "Fol better get some sleep too, tho that doesn't seem ta make a bit'a difference to if he's grumpy or not." With that, he gives Josy's arm a light poke, playfully, then heads out, nodding his thanks to the gold and brown.

Jerich nods quietly to Joslyn and whispers softly to the large egg.. "night there egg.." he walks to the side of the sands and bows to the gold before heading out quietly.. humming a little tune

Jerich walks toward the tunnel to the cavern entrance.

Laemir strides over to the tunnel to the Candidate Room.

Jeuneth could care less about cheesy smiles. She just seals her lids and dozes again, leaving Joslyn to bid the farewells for both of them. "It's impossible to sleep in th'barracks if memory serves," she muses briefly, then waves the remaining Candidates off. "Welcome, thank you, good night."

Foloran goes out, too...

Foloran walks toward the tunnel to the cavern entrance.
