Josy - Saturday, December 11, 1999, 7:14 PM

The following is a roleplay-log from SouCon MUSH (soucon.godlike.com 4201). The world of Pern is copyright to Anne McCaffrey.

Don't ask what Josylyn's been up to, but she took off a while ago up the rocky path and is only just no emerging, dirtier for the trip. Boots slung over her shoulder, she comes upon the beach and looks about for everyone else.

From the lagoon, Kayjay slaps her hand to her forehead. "Must you flirt with everything female, Suriath?"

From the lagoon, Kayla grins to the people here. She watches the dragons with a smile on her face.

From the lagoon, Raven blinks over at her green and clamps two hands over her mouth, eyes wide. She doesn't say a word, though such a reaction can best be attributed to a silent conversation.

You splash your way through the shallows and into the deeper water.

Kayjay blushes and shrugs apologetically in Raven's direction.

L'mir has been sizing up Brielth's actions, shaking his head as he floats on the warm water. "You're such a lug, Brielth. I'd apologize to her if I were you, but then of course I'm not." Seeing Josy coming toward the water, he waves to her. "Try the rope, Josy. It's a lot of fun."

Joslyn puts forth her palms in something of a placating gesture and says, "I'm fine wading in." She draws up a good smile for the offer, though, and proceeds somewhat carefully into the deeper water from the beach.

On the beach, Jayla did it again obviously, going completely oblivious to everything around her. With a shake of her head, she blinks again and peers out into the lagoon, grinning. Now just what is it that she sees? Nothing, if you'd ask her. Ahh, but ever so slowly does she shed her clothes. Probably fazing out again...

water with powerful strokes. This takes him out farther than most, where he blows bubbles and snorts at the avians above then some fish below.

Kayjay blinks, blushing slightly as she watches Joslyn. She dives deeper in the water, then starts to swim toward shore.

L'mir treads water, occasionally glancing out, watching Brielth's antics. "Ya know, I wonder if I can find another dragon to teach him some manners?"

Joslyn's actually a pretty decent swimmer. It's hard to live at Southern and be bad swimmer, seems like. She doesn't get out much farther than she can touch, though, for whatever reason. "Miss anything good?" she asks, a quizzical glance passing the Starsmith on the beach.

Kayjay starts swimming for shore.

On the beach, Kayjay wades up out of the sea-foaming rollers.

Suriath starts swimming for shore.

On the beach, Suriath wades up out of the sea-foaming rollers.

On the beach, Kayjay carefully puts on Suriath's riding straps, tugging them in places to check that they are secure.

On the beach, Kayjay hauls herself up onto Suriath with the help of a proffered foreleg, settling herself between the Sunrazed Savannah Brown's neckridges.

On the beach, Suriath downsweeps powerfully and leaps skywards.

Over the island, Suriath soars upwards from the beach.

Joslyn splashes about happily in toward the shallows, very pleased with the sunshine and the water even if she does look a little childish in the process. She waves droplets after Suriath and Kayjay then stomps about some more in the water. Easily amused.

L'mir continues floating atop the waves, watching Josy. "Bet yer good at toss dancin', Josy." he teases, then turns onto his stomach to stroke toward the shore.

As if thinking on the remark for a moment, Joslyn pauses in her damp rampage, a little breathless now with a crease in her brow. "I've never done it before," she says very literally, looking after L'mir a few moments before she shrugs.

On the beach, Jayla hasn't even made it into the water yet. Shame on her. But she's gotten rid of those clothes. That's got to be a good thing, right?

"Outta get F'loran ta teach you how ta dance like that. The stompin' yer doing would fit right in." L'mir grins as he speaks to Joslyn when he pauses swimming. "By the way, where's Fol? Did ya tie him up again? I thought he asked ya not ta do things like that." It's clear he's teasing, as his grin attests.

Joslyn shakes her head after recovering from a wave, one that toppled her over almost completely and therefore amused her greatly. "F'loran is prob'ly doing something F'loran-esque. We're better off not knowing," she says, heading to the shallows to ring out her shirt ineffectively.

On the beach, Jayla still wants to get wet most likely. Lets just see how long it'll take her. The clothes are kicked off to the side, and, with a shake of her head, makes a headlong run on the beach. Once deep enough into the swallows there's a little hop and soon enough she dives beneath the wate a few meters ahead of where she was. Fast, wasn't that?

On the beach, Jayla splashes her way through the shallows.

Jayla reaches the deeper water and starts swimming.

L'mir hasn't been watching what Jayla's doing, intent on listening to Josy as he was. Her splashing takes him off guard. Sputtering, he stops swimming to push the warm water out of his eyes then laughs. "Nice hop." he comments to the smith.

Joslyn is lucky enough to be out of the way, but she doesn't notice what's happened till she turns around and sees the Smith and smiles at her. And then asks without prelude, "Really wanna go get lost? We prob'ly could."

Jayla all but snorts amusedly at L'mir as she surfaces, pushing wet auburn hair away from her face. She grins, ducking her head slightly. "Thanks." the starsmith returns with a wink.

L'mir hmms softly. "Now, getting lost seems like an interesting thing ta do. Or were ya just teasing us, Josy? There is a trail up to the top of this area. I tried it last time I was here." Playfully, he splashes water toward the smith, then wiggles his brows at her.

"Well," says the goldrider thoughtfully, tugging her fingers through her curls brutally before she continues. "We could stay here and flirt more, but it'd get awfully boring for me. It'd be more fun to go see what we can see up that path," she concludes and starts that way without further delay. First, out of the water.

You start swimming for shore, and wade up out of the sea-foaming rollers onto the beach.

From the lagoon, Jayla dives under the water to avoid the splash and in good timing too. Drifting back up, she sends a splash right back at L'mir. Commenting over her shoulder to Josy, "Me? Flirt? Nah, you must be mistaken." But she can't seem to keep a serious look.

From the lagoon, L'mir chuckles, then ducks under the water to continue onward to the shoreline. Feeling the sand under him, he stands, dripping, then heads for his clothes. "Black. Reminds me 'a Ista." he says before tugging on dry clothes onto a wet body. Fun fun.

From the lagoon, L'mir starts swimming for shore.

L'mir wades up out of the sea-foaming rollers.

Joslyn left her clothes on the whole time, so she doesn't have to worry about getting dry ones. She does have to struggle with her boots, though, which is always comical since they never get laced right the first time. "We must be on th'other side of the world," she comments in the process, looking up at the daylight.

From the lagoon, Jayla follows after L'mir taking her sweet ol' time. Dry tunic is pulled on easily but those leather pants are eyed for a few moments.

Jayla wades up out of the sea-foaming rollers.

L'mir finishes getting dressed, then studies the surroundings. "I have no idea where this island is, just that ya can't get here by walking." Obvious, but..

Joslyn does eventually get her boots on right, giving the laces a last good tug before she gets to her feet. "Uhm, doesn't that sorta go for all islands?" she asks, head canted just a little. "Up the path, huh?" she adds, gesturing thataway. "You dressed over there?" to Jayla.

L'mir shrugs with a smile, then nods to the goldrider. "Up, yeah. That's the way I went last time I was here. Great view, actually."

Pants eyes sufficiently, Jayla pulls them up her wet legs with quite a lot of resistance. But she won't give up and after some more time they're finally on good. A nod goes to Joslyn even as she slips her feet into some boots. "Yep."

From the lagoon, Brielth starts swimming for shore.

Brielth wades up out of the sea-foaming rollers.

Joslyn shakes her head vigorously to dispel a few errant droplets then tugs her fingers through the short curls, eyes on the path the whole while. "Let's get goin' then?" she suggests, giving a pat to dozing Jeuneth as the queen comes within reach.

Brielth flops down on the black sand off to Jeuneth's left side, content to doze, nestled in the warm, black sand. Eyes closing now, he lets out a contented sigh, wiggling his body down into a shallow burrow.

L'mir just shakes his head again as he watches his bronze. With a sigh, he turns back to his friends. "I'm ready, yeah." he answers, moving along the path as it twists upward. "Comin', Jays?"

Jayla nods again to the goldrider, remaining silent this time as she runs her fingers through her hair. She grins to L'mir and quickly catches up with him.

Jeuneth's oblivious, having long since fallen asleep. She looks good, though, with the afternoon sunlight slanting off her cimmerian hide, shimmering softly as she breathes. Joslyn pauses, takes a good look at that, and then scampers on up the path.

L'mir arrives from the direction of the beach.

Jayla arrives from the direction of the beach.

Joslyn's going straight toward that rather precarious path ahead, looking about at the trees as she passes them, crunching stray leaves beneath her boots noisily. She darts off the path once, following a bright red bird that turns out to be a flower into the foliage a few feet.

L'mir peers upward at the tall canopy of trees overhead then sighs happily. "Yeah, I remember this part." he recalls, nodding slightly. "Kinda rough going up ahead, if my memory's good."

"You game?" Joslyn asks, looking back over her shoulder toward the bronzerider. This causes her to miss a step and she half-trips before catching herself up again. Ahem.

Game? Oh yeah, sure. Did it last time, though I'd say ya should take care where ya step. There's some odd beasts up this way. Ya know, the kind that like the taste of goldriders." He grins before reaching up to pluck a leaf off a nearby tree, placing the stem into his mouth.

Jayla follows quietly behind the bronzerider, looking around with large sapphire eyes. She grins slightly, nudding him in the back, "If I fall, your to blame." Of course, she's probably fall on him is she did...

Joslyn makes a wry face, proceeding with no further mishaps beneath the trees. "What? You're not gonna be my hero and slay the goldrider eating monsters?" As she approaches the steeper path, her expression gets a little more thoughtful. Maybe worried? "How high up is it to th'top?"

L'mir sucks on the leaf's stem, then grins. "Real high. Real high, and real steep. Yer not afraid, are ya?" he asks Josy. When Jayla speaks, he turns to look at her, purposefully stopping rather suddenly, hiding a grin.

Joslyn sounds very serious about it when she says, "I ain't afraid of nothin'." She surveys the path ahead, a faint twinge of worry coloring her stance but it soon passes and she proceeds upward. She might even make it, if she's lucky - which she's usually not.

Climbing...climbing...always climbing you somehow manage to arrive at the peak of a tall mountain.

L'mir climbs up from below.

Jayla climbs up from below.

Jayla isn't looking where she walking, busy studying the trees above her, and runs right into the bronzerider. Oops. Watch her blush at that too.

L'mir pulls at roots as he digs his way up the steep trail. His boots grip at the loose soil, nearing the top. When Jayla bumps into him he falls forward onto one knee, skidding downward a little. "Shards 'n feathers, Jays, careful there." he mutters softly to her, then gets up, taking a few steps forward again.

Joslyn doesn't notice anything that goes on behind/beneath her, too busy climbing to pay much heed to anything else. She's huffing and puffing after the first few minutes, her clothes drying out on the way. She's red-faced and sweaty and dirty again when she gets to the top, but she seems pleased with the outcome. "Made it," almost smug.

L'mir clutches at his upper arms, as the wind howls around them. "Brr. Just as chilly as it was back then too." Finally getting to the top, he walks cautiously to the outer edge, looking at the view. "Just as beautiful too. Always did like it high up."

Joslyn edges over toward the cliff, her hands shoved down into her pockets which are probably still damp down deep. "Think how bad it'd hurt to fall from up here," she comments, just close enough to L'mir that she could push him if she wanted to. "Good view, though," she confirms, nodding.

Jayla still blushes terribly even as she joins the other two. Best for her to not say a word now.

L'mir looks over toward Joslyn, noting her position, then sidles to the left just a tad. "Don't think you'd even feel it, actually. Well, maybe when ya hit bottom, but goin' down? I can't imagine what that'd be like. Hmm. Doin' a spiral on Brielth without him under me? That'd be odd."

Joslyn grins a little sideways at L'mir and his scooting, herself stepping up toward the precipice and looking down toward the ground from this height. "I guess after the first three or four bones broke, you'd kinda get used to it," she comments, bouncing some to help keep warm.

Jayla inches to the very edge and she peers quietly over. Eyes looking ever so calmly to the ground below, she grins somewhat, "Not if you're knocked out first, you won't feel a thing." Hmm, perhaps she should test this out one of these days.

L'mir now is preoccupied with staring out at the sunset, and those first twinklings of stars. He shoves his hands into his pockets, giving a small, quick shiver, then says, "Nothin' like stars either. I wish Brielth could ride me up there ta get one of them. I'd take that one over there, next ta the big blinky one." His long finger points upward and to the right.

Darkly amused, Joslyn kicks a stone over the lip of the cliff and watches it bounce out of sight as she continues the bouncing. "So, if someone clubbed you over the head before they pushed you off the cliff, you'd prob'ly like it better." Her mind toys with this idea some and then gets distracted by L'mir's stars. "I'd wanna whole constellation."

"Wouldn't much like one of those stars, L'mir, if you had right with you." Linia replies starkly in that starsmith sort of way as she continues to look downward, not at the emerging stars asa she normally would. "They're right pretty from here though."

Pushing back a lock of hair that escaped his runnertail, L'mir juts one hip out, placing the opposite foot against the side of a large boulder. Leaning against it, he now leans an elbow on his thigh, still looking upward. "With me or not, I'd still like one. Put it in this here pocket," he pats his right one, "and let it glow at night so I could see. Ya know, like when I was comin' home from the weyrhall or somethin'. Easy to see, better'n the dark."

"Then no one else would ever get t'see it," Joslyn comments thoughtfully, looking at the bronzerider for a moment before she tips her gaze back to the darkening sky again. "That doesn't seem very fair. No," decisively. "Stars gotta stay in the sky where they belong." She rocks between her heels and toes now, starting to look a bit pink about the ears from the breeze and lingering dampness.

Jayla shakes her head slightly at the bronzerider's comment, but a word about it she does not say. She'll keep those theories (and lessons) to herself for the time being. A nod, however, does go to Joslyn. "Yeah, keep it so I'll still have something to do with my time, you know." The edge she stays at, tipping slightly yet carefully forward.

L'mirchuckles softly, not wishing to get into a debate with the goldrider when there was so much to see and appreciate around him. "I bet we'll be wishin' for a star ta light our way down the path in a little while. When the night's completely taken over."

Joslyn was going to laugh at Jayla a little, but then L'mir spoke up with something she hadn't considered till then. "Uhhm," she begins, a tentative edge coloring her tone. "Maybe we oughta start back down soon?" is her suggestions, steps skirting to the path already.

L'mir probably would be seen smirking just a tad, but the dwindling light would hide it from anyone not very close to him. Taking a last look out at the stars, he sighs, then raises a palm to them as if sending a fond goodbye. "Ya." he says as he glances at the smith. "Best we head on down, else we may find us on our butts more'n our feet."

"We might anyway," says Joslyn, and the gulp is audible as she comes to the edge of the path once again. "Nobody trips or we're all in trouble," she states firmly, taking the first daring step back down the way they came.

"Starlights' quite a companion on a cold an' lonely night." Jayla remarks quietly as she spins around, not even heeding the fact that she's practically right over the cliff. Safely walking over to L'mir, though, she nods. "Sure. Lets do."

L'mir walks, angling his feet against the slope of the steep incline. "Just take it slow, and we'll be fine." His voice seems convincing enough, though his face shows deep attention to what he's doing.

Jayla snorts lightly at L'mir, "I'll be carefull. Just watch." Coming from the one who runs into people all the time. Nonetheless, she tries to find a good footholds as she follows after L'mir. But her confidence, and balance, soon disappears as she slips right into the bronzerider.

L'mir loses his balance totally now, arms flailing at his sides as he vies to stay upright. Failing at this goal, his knees buckle under him, sending him down onto the slippery moss of the trail. Zzziiippp.. smack! He's on his butt in less than the time it takes him to blink, skidding downward, right into Josy.

Naturally, Joslyn loses her balance in turn, her feet slipping out from under her at once. She does half a somersault and then catches herself somewhat, slide-stumbling toward the bottom at a break-neck pace. When she hits the ground, it's with a hard, audible THUMP and a good groan.

L'mir arrives from the mountain peak far above.

Jayla arrives from the mountain peak far above.

L'mir literally rolls down the trail, right after Josy, moss ripping off the stones as his body grates against them. Green-stained and very sore, he finally ends his rolling directly atop the goldrider, sprawled out there, yelling, "Shardit!" good and loud.

Much to her suprise, yet not all that shocking, Jayla slides right down the trail on her bottom, much thanks to those slippery leather pants she's wearing. Groaning rather loudly, she comes to a sudden stop but then just sorta rolls the last few meters until she lands right on L'mir, loudly mutters a long string of choice words.

"Shells!" yells Joslyn when L'mir lands upon her, and she tries to squirm out from beneath him with little if any success. She's a mess now, with a good bruise on her forehead already swelling and purpling. Scrapes show here and there, and there's dirt pretty much all over her.

L'mir oofs, not expecting to bear the brunt of the cascading Jayla on his back. His pointy chin gets shoved forward, probably right between the shoulderblades of Joslyn's back. "Mmmph!" he mutters, then tries to get his knees under him to get up.

With the Starsmith likewise squashing Joslyn, the goldrider fails to verbalize anymore complaints but just lays there in pain for the time being. There's a faint, pathetic sort of laughing coming from the tumbled goldrider 'neath the people-pile - though it turns to a squeak as she gets jabbed like that.

Jeuneth> Jeuneth stirs a little, ever-so-faintly aware of her rider's discomfort and that intruding on her more pleasant dreams of permanence on this war beach. She doesn't awaken entirely, just makes it plain that she's bothered enough to fidget the spade of her tail.

Jayla would rather like this little predicament, if she weren't in pain swearing herself blue now. With another groan and a delaying yelp, she rolls unsteady off of L'mir to the ground with a small thud.

L'mir makes the mistake of misjudging which side Jayla rolled off to, of course picking the same way to get off of Josy's back. Finding himself not free of the tangle, but still in it, he mumbles an apology to her then scrambles to his feet. Holding out both his hands, he says, "C'n I help ya get up?" Following that is a grimace then a shiver.

Jeuneth> Brielth has had his eyes transfixed in the general direction the trio went. His reddish-bronze head lifts, swiveling to look upward, eyes whirling.

Jayla mutters a little something more and soon the swearing drifts off to a weak chuckle as she takes L'mir's hands with a small wince. Not to mention blushing yet again despite the dirt on her face.

Joslyn hangs out on the ground for a few moments, her face all scruntched up as she contemplates stretching out. First legs, then arms, then she sits up very slow-like. "Owww," is her brilliant observation, put forth with another ugly face.

L'mir gets Jayla up then offers his hand to the goldrider, letting go of a long, irregular sigh. "C'mon, Josy.."

Jeuneth> At least you're doing it quietly, which doesn't disturb Jeuneth, which is all that matters to her.

"You guys squished me!" Joslyn declares, rubbing her offended head with a grimace of her own. She does take the offered hand, her own all scraped on both sides and nicely dirty. "And made me fall," she adds with a downtrodden sigh.

L'mir somehow finds the energy to chuckle, having gently tugged Josy to her feet. "If ya want, I could dust you off," he attempts a light tease, but then quickly adds, "but I bet what you'd like most is a hot bath.

Joslyn ammends, "Full of numbweed." She doesn't bother dusting herself off, instead devoting her fingers to investigate the scrape on her chin which leaves her with another heavy sigh. "I think we oughta go home," she says, looking down the rest of the path unhappily.

L'mir doesn't look down, he looks up. Judging the skies as if he were scanning from the Star Stones for Thread, he calculates quietly. "I'd say we have little time before it's pitch black. Home is a good idea at this point, I'd say."

Jeuneth> Brielth wiggles around until he regains his footing enough to stand, then leans down to send a swirl of warm air around the gold nearby. Starting to lumber forward, he seems intent on finding his lifemate, or at least trying.

Joslyn just starts along the path, something of a limp on her left side but she can walk on her own all right. She mumbles to herself as she goes, a grumbling sound that hovers about her. She mutters to herself, "... I... in the... and falling down... getting squashed... the..."

Jeuneth> Jeuneth stirs further at the disruptive whuffling, flickering open one lid at a time until she judges what the bronze is about. Then she finds her own feet, stretching to them and padding along at a slower pace somewhat behind him.

L'mir cradles his left arm in his right palm, occasionally reaching up to rub his shoulder. Another sigh is forthcoming, then he stares out into the growing darkness. "They're waiting." is his reply to the goldrider's mutter.

Joslyn bats a scraped hand at L'mir and keeps on trudging toward the beach, no fluttering off to investigate flowerbirds this time. Straight and narrow for Josy, who arrives at Jeuneth's side looking very much the grumpy thundercloud. Straps start going on methodically but slowed with winces. Grumble, grumble.

L'mir's not so much grumpy as he is quiet and reserved, a true change for him. No wisecracks, no jokes, just a serious face that's riddled with grimaces as cuts and scrapes, not to mention his shoulder, send their own reminders to his mind. "Hey there, Brielth, not that bad, honest." he mutters, mimicing Josy's strapping-up of the bronze.

L'mir disappears between some large dark boulders.

Joslyn requires much assistance to scramble all the way to her perch on Jeuneth's neck, strapping herself in with another sigh. Whatever conversation transpires between the two is silent, though the girl does state at an audible volume, "I hurt all over." And the pulls on her riding jacket and readies Jeuneth.

Leaving behind the thick jungle, you pick your way through a rugged pile of dark boulders.

You approach Jeuneth just as the Queen crouches for you, one foreleg bent to allow you an easier mount.

** Brielth lowers his redtoned head downward to peer at L'mir, sniffing at his head and side. Nudging him gently. Straps in place, he lowers himself, something he hardly does, and awaits L'mir to mount.

** L'mir reaches up to take a firm grasp on Brielth's riding straps, and swings up into the seat between his neckridges with the help of his foreleg.

** Jeuneth glances to the bronze, then back up at her lifemate who's sort of collapsed wearily against the gold's neck. "Great idea you had, L'mir," she comments drily, nevermind it was her that suggested the exploring.

** From Brielth's bronze back, L'mir's mouth curls up into the slightest of smiles, shaking his head. "Yeah, great idea." he comments back in a low voice, last thing on his mind is an argument right now. Silently, he gives the redtoned bronze the signal to rise.

** Brielth downsweeps powerfully and leaps skywards.

** Over the island, Brielth soars upwards from the beach.

You leap skywards.

** Brielth disappears into Between.

** Jeuneth disappears into Between.

Between

Between is a cold, empty void of awful nothingness. You can hear nothing, see nothing, smell nothing, touch nothing, and it is only the knowledge that light lies on the other side, and that your dragon is with you, that keeps you from screaming. Silently, you chant the ancient talisman, as you hover in this place between places...

Black...

Blacker...

Blackest!

You suddenly emerge...

** Jeuneth emerges from Between with a blast of cold air!

** From Brielth's bronze back, L'mir attempts to raise his arm to send Josy a farewell, but his goodbyes are exchanged for a sharp ouch of pain. Sheepishly, he calls to her, "I'm gonna go change.", then signals his bronze to turn southward.

Joslyn replies simply, "I'm gonna go home." Jeuneth knows the way already, losing altitude in an easy spiral that lands her somewhere in the jungle, her dark self disappearing in the darker night.

You soar to the Western Weyrs below.
